Students explore habitats Students explore habitats: Second graders at Waterman Elementary School spent the day exploring habitats of the world in exhibits that they created themselves. It was hands-on learning at its best as they listened to the sounds of the rainforest, trudged through deserts and explored pond life in various classrooms. Each second grade classroom researched one particular region of the world, from the Polar Regions of Antarctica and the arctic to the forests and  deserts. With their new-found knowledge, each class of students developed a classroom museum to educate their peers in other classes. On Habitat Day, second grade classes went from room-to-room, exploring areas created by fellow students. Each second grade classroom was a fact-filled habitat, where students actively collected information ...
Important letter from the Board of Ed Important letter from the Board of Ed: Dear community member,   I write to clarify a proposition that you will find on this year's school district ballot.  On May 17 district voters will vote on five propositions. Four propositions deal directly with school issues as introduced in mailings and planned for upcoming public discussion. The fifth proposition, however – funding for the Skaneateles Public Library – is on the school ballot by virtue of a New York State education law requirement.  Specifically, if a public library wishes to seek public funding, like the Skaneateles Public Library this year, the only way is by community vote. And the only way for the community to vote is by proposition on the school district ballot.  The library vote is a standalone proposition under New York State ...

History meets history at Wax Museum History meets history at Wax Museum:       For a brief window of time, there was an almost eerie new twist to the annual Fourth Grade Wax Museum of Famous Americans. During the afternoon session of the museum, fourth grade teachers had the students go through their own “museum” in the hallways, to view each other. And so Neil Armstrong came face-to-face with Pocohantas.  Inventors like Thomas Edison saw into the future as folks like Steve Jobs and Bill Gates passed by. Sacajawea and Davy Crocket crossed paths with George Lucas and Muhammad Ali. As they have for decades, the fourth graders lined the hallways of State Street School with props, wearing carefully chosen costumes of Americans they have studied and come to know. Visitors in the  afternoon and evening events walked ...

Weekend event was Weekend event was "vintage Skaneateles":       The  community packed the high school for the Senior Pasta Dinner and the Sophomore Circus Friday night. The cafeteria, commons area and gym were abuzz with activity, laughter and memories. Upstairs, parents of seniors wondered “how did they grow up so fast?” Downstairs, elementary students and parents looked up to the enthusiastic mature sophomores who entertained them at the circus.  The circus is such a long-standing tradition that many of the parents said they could remember when they were the sophomores painting faces and managing booths. Back upstairs, seniors entertained with music while others served up pasta with a smile; parents shopped at a silent auction that was overflowing with great choices. And everyone celebrated the ...
