Budget, Board Vote May 16; Accessible Voting Available Budget, Board Vote May 16; Accessible Voting Available: Skaneateles, NY (May 12, 2017) – The Skaneateles Central School District’s Budget and Board of Education vote will take place on Tuesday, May 16 from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the Waterman Primary School auditorium. The Waterman Primary School and its auditorium are accessible facilities with accessible voting stations and voter assistance available if needed. A total of four propositions will be on this year’s SCS Budget ballot including the general fund budget, school bus purchases, a new capital reserve, and an athletic field reserve. Two Board of Education candidates will be on the ballot as well, including Julie Abbot-Kenan and Geralyn Huba. Lazan will share her firsthand experience as a nine-year old child interned with her family in the German concentration camp of Bergen-Belsen, the camp in which Anne Frank died. The session with Lazan will take students, faculty, and staff behind the barbed wire to describe in detail what life was like during those harrowing years, while also explaining the events leading up to her family’s incarceration in Bergen-Belsen and its life changing aftermath. VanRiper Competes at NYC Shakespeare Competition VanRiper Competes at NYC Shakespeare Competition: By: Christopher Broadwell – New York City, NY (May 8, 2017) – With a performance of a sonnet and monologue from Shakespeare, Madeleine VanRiper from Skaneateles, NY, a student of Aisha McConochy at Skaneateles High School in Skaneateles, placed as a semi-finalist in the 34th annual English-Speaking Union National Shakespeare Competition in New York City. The Competition took place on May 1, 2017 on the stage of the Mitzi Newhouse Theater at Lincoln Center with 54 semi-finalists from as many ESU Branch competitions nationwide. Madeleine previously won the ESU Syracuse Branch competition. NJHS Raises Money for WE Charity NJHS Raises Money for WE Charity: SKANEATELES, NY (May 4, 2017) – Members of the Skaneateles Middle School Junior Honor Society recently took it upon themselves to set up a lemonade and cookie stand in downtown Skaneateles to raise money for the impoverished through www.we.org . The group raised close to $300 for the cause, selling lemonade for $1.50 and cookies for $1.00.  Another group then followed suit and raised an additional $75. Skaneateles Middle School counselor Chris Viggiano and social studies teacher Josh Williams are adding to the cause as well as 7 th grade E.L.A. classes.  Proceeds from a ‘Casual Friday’ donation at the middle school will also be added in to help the overall donation level to approach $1,000. Coordinated by middle school social studies teachers Lori Usifer and Julie Spinelli, seventh graders journeyed to Philadelphia and back on Friday, April 28 to learn about our nation’s history. Touring the city streets, students took in the many sights and historic venues that Philadelphia has to offer including the Franklin Institute, the National Constitution Center, as well as Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. The program will run from 5-8 p.m. Students in Corey Riley’s Music Technology class and Jessica Sawchuk’s art class have been working with artists Lorne Covington and Douglas Quin, creators of Paradise, to record sounds and upload images. The students’ work will be integrated into Paradise, an immersive sound installation which responds to your movements within the exhibit space. Strang Places Third in Business Plan Competition Strang Places Third in Business Plan Competition: SKANEATELES, NY (May 2, 2017) – Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES recently held the 8 th annual Lindy Business Plan Competition with twelve students from nine programs presenting business proposals before the school and five guest judges. Skaneateles High School senior Clark Strang, who recently presented before the Skaneateles Central School Board of Education on his experiences within the BOCES program, finished third overall for his Man of Steel Metal Works proposal. Strang, a serious forge and metal worker, has been doing metal work from his home for several years while also taking part in the BOCES Machining and Welding program. Students Tell Community Stories in Windows Project Students Tell Community Stories in Windows Project: SKANEATELES, NY (May 1, 2017) – Over 30 members of the Skaneateles community shared their stories with groups of eighth graders on Monday at Skaneateles Middle School as a part of the annual Windows Project conducted by social studies teacher Jim Ryan. Student Art Displayed at Baltimore Woods Exhibit Student Art Displayed at Baltimore Woods Exhibit: SKANEATELES, NY (April 28, 2017) – Six pieces of art from Skaneateles Central School students at Waterman Primary School and State Street Secondary School will be displayed as a part of the Baltimore Woods Nature Center Student Art Exhibit from May 5-May 27. Artwork from Waterman students Alethea Goldberger, Amelia Hullihan-Demperio, and Mia Johnson along with State Street students Tate Ryan, Bailey Post, and Walker Barnes will be featured. High School Students Excel at Ithaca Math Day High School Students Excel at Ithaca Math Day: SKANEATELES, NY (April 28, 2017) – Fourteen students from Skaneateles High School took part in the Ithaca College Mathematical Exploration Day held on Tuesday, April 25 with a team of four students earning first prize in the program’s math competition. Students Mia Grasso, Natalie Condon, Chloe Metz, and Nicole DeRosa were teamed together earning first place honors among some 40 teams in competition. Energy Efficiency Key in Project 2021 Planning Energy Efficiency Key in Project 2021 Planning: SKANEATELES, NY (April 26, 2017) – Among the listed priorities in Skaneateles Central School’s proposed Project 2021, which will go to a district wide vote on November 14, is improved classroom climates and energy efficiency.  Investments made in energy efficient infrastructure items will reduce energy consumption and costs while also increasing comfort for students and teachers through better temperature control and improved ventilation, resulting in a better learning environment and student performance. Board Approves 2017-18 School Budget Board Approves 2017-18 School Budget: SKANEATELES, NY (April 13, 2017) – The Skaneateles Central School District’s 2017-2018 budget has been approved by the Board of Education and reflects a lower than projected tax levy increase of 1.62 percent.
