Boiler
Boiler Project

Introduction

Thank you for seeking more information on the proposed capital project to replace the failed boiler in the high school.  The vote will be from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on August 10, 2010 at Waterman Elementary School.  The following information is meant to supplement the information community members received in the mail. If your questions are not answered here, feel free to contact Assistant Superintendent Dale Bates at 291-2222 or Superintendent Phil D’Angelo at 291-2221.

Boiler Project Q & A:

How was the boiler damaged?

The boiler was damaged during an equipment malfunction and failure on January 4, 2010.

Why do we need to replace the boiler?

The boiler sustained extensive damage requiring repair and/or replacement.

Why not repair damage to the existing boiler?

The current boiler is nearly 60 years old and the proposed repairs exceed the cost of a replacement system.

Additionally, the district can incorporate the new boiler into any future heating plant upgrades  which will maximize the investment of the new boiler.

How is the new boiler being paid for?

The new boiler is being paid for by state building aid and insurance recovery proceeds.

What is the tax impact of the proposed project?

There is zero local tax impact.

Where do we vote?

The vote will be at Waterman Elementary School from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

What if I will be out of town and/or absent on August 10, 2010?

Absentee ballots are available to qualified voters who are unable to be present in the school district on August 10, 2010.  Completed applications must be returned to the District Clerk’s Office no later than 5 p.m. on August 10, 2010.  To receive an absentee ballot, visit or write to the District Clerk’s Office, SCS, 45 East Elizabeth Street, Skaneateles, NY   13152.

How does the new boiler fit into future upgrades at the High School?

Inevitably, the 1952 portions of the high school will need renovating, as reflected in the district’s long range plans for a future capital construction project.  Likewise, the existing steam boiler plant has outlived its useful life expectancy and will need to be replaced.  The district will be able to capitalize on the current proposed boiler investment by incorporating it into a future capital construction project and into any future heating system renovations.
