The program is taught through six teaching components.

Read To

The teacher reads to the children for enjoyment, discussion and

       learning subject material.

Shared Reading

The teacher uses literature to teach skills and strategies of how

to read.  This is done with the whole class.

Guided Reading

Children are grouped and instructed based on ongoing diagnostic

      assessment and instructional needs.

Independent Reading

Children read on their own from literature they have selected.

Guided Writing

Basic writing skills are taught to the whole class.  Assignments

often focus on what was taught in the shared reading setting.

Independent Writing

Children are given the opportunity to write on their own on self-

selected topics.  Skills taught in guided writing are reinforced

      in this setting.
